Emulation: Benoit Paille

Benoit P. has travelled the world taking environmental portraits. The work of his which attracts me the most is his photographs of rainbow gatherings across the continent. The pictures are very simple and true to the subject; nothing is staged. A shallow depth of field is extremely  important in his work, as well as the fact that the background is always darker than the subject. Lighting is very soft and he uses studio set ups as well as ambient light, which varies from shot to shot.

The background has a lot to do with the subject. Colours are extremely complementary, from which we get a sense of comfort, a sense of being at home.
